Staying Away From a Toxic Relationship – 3 Steps to Success

From Shannon E. Cook

Toxic relationships, while immensely destructive, can be very
difficult to break away from. Though this may seem counter
intuitive, it makes sense if you consider that people who stay with
someone who persistently behaves in degrading, humiliating, or
controlling ways is beaten down over time. Low self esteem can
cause the partner to believe that he or she doesn’t deserve any
better, or that he or she is incapable of making it successfully on
his or her own. However, it is possible to free yourself from toxic
relationships and embrace a healthier and happier future. Here are
3 steps to successfully extricating yourself from a toxic
relationship:

1.      Take good care of yourself physically. Eat healthy meals
with fresh fruit, vegetables, lean proteins and whole grains. Cut
way down on highly processed foods and sugars. Take vitamins and
supplements as optimal for your health. Most people can benefit
from a multivitamin and fish oil. Start an exercise program
approved by your doctor and commit to regularly working out.
Strengthening your body does much to support your emotional
resilience.

2.      Surround yourself with as many support people as possible.
This can include friends and family members, and support
professionals such as a counselor and/or coach. Your friends and
family can provide emotional support and “reprogramming” of the
negative messages you heard from your partner. Professionals can
offer support, encouragement, help you process your emotions, and
help co create strategies to move you forward toward your goals.

3.      Get back in touch with your “red flag” instincts and begin
heeding the prompts you receive. Begin by getting back into
awareness of the way your body reacts to different events, people,
and emotional stimuli.  Pay attention to how you respond
physically when someone does something kind, as well as when
someone does something hurtful. Begin to move toward the people and
things that give you physically relaxed, peaceful sensations, and
avoid the people and situations where you feel shamed, anxious, and
upset. As you become more comfortable with the positive sensations,
you will become more aware and inclined toward healthier situations.
